Physical Appearance of the Prophet
صفة النبي ﷺ
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was of medium height, neither excessively tall nor short, with a broad chest and wide shoulders. His face was luminous, described by his Companions as resembling the full moon. The most comprehensive descriptions come from Hind ibn Abi Halah and Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with them both).
Hind ibn Abi Halah, the stepson of the Prophet through Khadijah, gave one of the most detailed descriptions preserved in the classical sources. He said the Prophet was dignified and awe-inspiring. His face shone like the moon on a full-moon night. He was taller than medium height but shorter than the conspicuously tall. His head was large and well-formed, and his hair was slightly wavy. If it parted naturally he left it parted, otherwise he did not force it. His hair would reach his earlobes when he let it grow.
Ali ibn Abi Talib described him as being of medium stature with large, heavily-lashed eyes that were naturally darkened as though with kohl. His complexion was fair with a reddish tinge. He had a wide forehead and a full, thick beard. His neck was like an ivory column in its clarity and beauty, and between his shoulders was the Seal of Prophethood, a raised piece of flesh about the size of a pigeon's egg. He walked with vigour, as if descending a slope, and when he turned he turned his entire body.
His blessed hands were described as larger and softer than silk. Those who shook his hand said the fragrance of his palm lingered on theirs for the rest of the day. His perspiration, according to Anas ibn Malik, was like pearls and had a finer scent than musk. Umm Sulaym would collect his perspiration to mix with perfume.
The Companions would say that no one who saw him unexpectedly could help but feel awe, and no one who came to know him could help but love him. Whoever described him would say, "I have not seen anyone like him, before or after."
