His Speech & Silence

كلامه وصمته ﷺ

The Prophet (peace be upon him) spoke clearly and concisely, choosing his words with care. He would often repeat important statements three times to ensure understanding. He was not given to idle talk, and his silences were as meaningful as his words.

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) described his speech: 'He did not speak rapidly as you do. Rather, he spoke clearly, word by word, so that whoever sat with him could retain what he said.' He would pause between sentences, and his voice carried authority without being harsh. When he spoke, his words were few but comprehensive — he was given jawami' al-kalim (the most concise and comprehensive expressions). He would speak only when necessary. Abu Hurayrah said: 'The Messenger of Allah was silent for long periods and would laugh only by smiling.' He did not interrupt others and would listen attentively until the speaker had finished. When he turned to address someone, he would turn his whole body, not just his head, giving them his full attention. When speaking on matters of importance, he would repeat himself three times. Anas ibn Malik reported: 'When the Prophet said something, he would repeat it three times so that it would be understood. And when he came to a group of people, he would greet them three times.' His words were measured — neither too few to be unclear nor too many to be burdensome. He was particularly careful with his tongue regarding others. He said: 'I do not like to say anything about anyone that, if I were told about it, would displease me.' He discouraged backbiting, gossip, and excessive speech. He said: 'Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent.' This principle of thoughtful speech and meaningful silence was among the foundations of his character.
