The Description of Umm Ma'bad

وصف أم معبد

During the Hijrah from Makkah to Madinah, the Prophet (peace be upon him) and Abu Bakr al-Siddiq stopped at the tent of Umm Ma'bad al-Khuza'iyyah. Her description of the Prophet to her husband upon his return is considered the most detailed and eloquent single physical description ever recorded, and it has been preserved as a masterpiece of Arabic prose.

When the Prophet and Abu Bakr passed by Umm Ma'bad's tent during the migration to Madinah, they asked to buy some meat or dates, but she had nothing. She had a weak, emaciated goat that could not go out to graze with the flock. The Prophet asked permission to milk it. He touched its udder, mentioned the name of Allah, and the goat yielded abundant milk that filled a large vessel. He gave Umm Ma'bad and her family drink, then drank last himself. He milked it again and left the vessel full for her before departing. When her husband Abu Ma'bad returned and saw the milk, he asked her what had happened. She told him about the blessed stranger. He asked her to describe him, and she gave her celebrated description: "I saw a man of evident splendour, fair of face, fine in form. He was not marred by thinness, nor was he overly heavy. He was graceful and handsome. His eyes were deep black and large, and his lashes were long. His voice was slightly husky. His neck was long, his beard was thick. His eyebrows were arched and connected." She continued: "When he was silent, he was clothed in dignity. When he spoke, he was crowned with eloquence. His speech was like a string of pearls falling one after another. He was the most striking and beautiful of people from afar, and the finest and most radiant of them from close. He was sweet of speech, clear in argument, neither too brief nor too lengthy. His words flowed forth like a stream. He was of medium height; the eye was not wearied by excess height nor did it look down on him for shortness. He was a branch between two branches — the most handsome of the three and the most respected." Her husband Abu Ma'bad exclaimed that this must be the man of Quraysh whom they had heard about, and he expressed his desire to join him. This description has been treasured by the Muslim community across the centuries for its beauty and comprehensiveness. Scholars have noted that Umm Ma'bad, despite meeting the Prophet only briefly, captured both his physical appearance and his bearing with remarkable precision.
