The Battle of Badr

غزوة بدر

Summary

The first major battle in Islam. 313 Muslims faced approximately 1,000 well-equipped Qurayshi warriors at the wells of Badr. Allah granted the Muslims a decisive victory. Seventy Quraysh were killed and seventy captured, including prominent leaders like Abu Jahl.

Details

The battle began when the Muslims set out to intercept a Qurayshi trade caravan led by Abu Sufyan, who evaded them by changing his route. The Quraysh, led by Abu Jahl, marched out with a large army despite the caravan's safety, determined to crush the Muslims. The Prophet prayed through the night: 'O Allah, if this group is destroyed, You will not be worshipped on earth.' Allah sent angels to aid the Muslims, as mentioned in Surah Al-Anfal (8:9). The Prophet threw a handful of dust toward the enemy. Notable Quraysh leaders killed included Abu Jahl, Utbah ibn Rabi'ah, Shaybah ibn Rabi'ah, and Umayyah ibn Khalaf. The battle was fought on 17th Ramadan and is called Yawm al-Furqan (the Day of Criterion).
