Brotherhood between Muhajirun & Ansar

المؤاخاة بين المهاجرين والأنصار

Summary

The Prophet (peace be upon him) established bonds of brotherhood (mu'akhah) between the Meccan emigrants (Muhajirun) and the Madinan helpers (Ansar), pairing each Muhajir with an Ansari. The Ansar shared their homes, wealth, and even offered to divide their properties.

Details

Notable pairings included Abu Bakr with Kharijah ibn Zayd, Umar with Itban ibn Malik, and Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf with Sa'd ibn ar-Rabi'. Sa'd offered to divide his wealth and even divorce one of his wives for Abdur-Rahman, who famously declined and asked only to be shown the marketplace, where he began trading and soon became prosperous. This brotherhood created social bonds that transcended tribal loyalties — a revolutionary concept in Arabian society.
