The Conquest of Makkah (Fath Makkah)
فتح مكة
Summary
The Prophet (peace be upon him) marched on Makkah with 10,000 Muslims after the Quraysh violated the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah. Makkah was conquered virtually without bloodshed. The Prophet entered humbly, his head bowed on his riding camel, reciting Surah al-Fath. He cleansed the Ka'bah of 360 idols.
Details
The Quraysh's ally Banu Bakr attacked Banu Khuza'ah (allies of the Muslims), violating the treaty. Abu Sufyan came to Madinah to negotiate but failed. The Muslim army marched in secret. The Prophet ordered Abu Sufyan to be brought to a vantage point to witness the Muslim forces. Abu Sufyan then accepted Islam. The Prophet declared Makkah a sanctuary and granted general amnesty, saying: 'Go, you are free (Idhhabu fa antum at-tulaqa).' He forgave even his bitterest enemies including Hind bint Utbah and Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl. He entered the Ka'bah and recited: 'Truth has come and falsehood has vanished; indeed falsehood is bound to vanish' (17:81). Bilal climbed atop the Ka'bah and gave the adhan for the first time from its roof.
