Grandson (son of Fatimah and Ali)

Husayn ibn Ali

الحسين بن علي رضي الله عنهما

Sayyid Shabab Ahl al-Jannahسيد شباب أهل الجنة

Overview

The younger grandson of the Prophet. The Prophet said of him and his brother: 'They are my two sweet-smelling flowers (rayhanatay) from this world.'

Story

Husayn was born in 4 AH, the second son of Ali and Fatimah. The Prophet named him, performed the aqiqah, and loved him dearly. The Prophet would carry both Hasan and Husayn and say: 'These are my two sons and the sons of my daughter. O Allah, I love them, so love them and love whoever loves them.' The Prophet once prolonged his prostration (sujud) in prayer for so long that the Companions thought something had happened. When he finished, they asked, and he said: 'My grandson mounted my back and I did not want to hurry him until he had finished.' He would kiss them and hold them to his chest. Aqra ibn Habis saw this and said: 'I have ten children and I have never kissed any of them.' The Prophet looked at him and said: 'Whoever is not merciful will not receive mercy.' The Prophet said: 'Husayn is from me and I am from Husayn. Allah loves whoever loves Husayn. Husayn is one of my grandchildren (sibt).' He also said: 'Hasan and Husayn are the leaders of the youth of the people of Paradise, and their father is better than them.'
