Story
Maymunah bint al-Harith al-Hilaliyyah was the last woman the Prophet married. Her original name was Barrah, and the Prophet changed it to Maymunah (meaning 'blessed'). She was the sister-in-law of al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib, the Prophet's uncle, as her sister Umm al-Fadl Lubabah was married to al-Abbas. She was also the maternal aunt of the great military commander Khalid ibn al-Walid and of Ibn Abbas.
The marriage took place in 7 AH (629 CE) during the Umrah al-Qada (the compensatory Umrah following the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah). According to reports, she gave herself in marriage to the Prophet, and the verse in Surah al-Ahzab (33:50) — 'and a believing woman who gives herself to the Prophet' — has been said by some scholars to refer to her. Al-Abbas arranged the marriage on the Prophet's behalf.
She was known for her piety and god-consciousness. Ibn Abbas, her nephew, said of her: 'She was the most pious among us and the most devoted to maintaining family ties.' Aisha also testified to her righteousness. She passed away in 51 AH (671 CE) at a place called Sarif, near Makkah — the same location where her marriage to the Prophet had been consummated — and she was buried there. Ibn Abbas led her funeral prayer.
