Zaynab bint Khuzaymah
زينب بنت خزيمة رضي الله عنها
Umm al-Masakin (Mother of the Poor) — أم المساكين
Overview
Known as 'Mother of the Poor' even before Islam for her extraordinary generosity. She was widowed when her husband was martyred at Badr or Uhud, and the Prophet married her. She passed away only a few months after the marriage.
Story
Zaynab bint Khuzaymah was known even in the pre-Islamic period for her compassion and charity toward the poor and destitute, earning her the title 'Umm al-Masakin' (Mother of the Poor). Her first husband was Ubaydah ibn al-Harith (or Abdullah ibn Jahsh, according to some reports), who was martyred.
The Prophet married her out of compassion for her situation and in recognition of her noble character. She was among the most generous of the Prophet's wives, continuing her lifelong practice of feeding the poor and giving in charity.
She passed away approximately two or three months after marrying the Prophet, making her the shortest-lived of his wives in marriage and the only wife besides Khadijah to die during his lifetime. She was buried in al-Baqi cemetery in Madinah.
