Ibrahim ibn Muhammad
إبراهيم بن محمد
Overview
The youngest child of the Prophet, born to Mariyah al-Qibtiyyah. He died in infancy at approximately sixteen or eighteen months old, causing the Prophet great sorrow.
Story
Ibrahim was born in Dhul-Hijjah, 8 AH in Madinah. His mother was Mariyah bint Sham'un al-Qibtiyyah, who had been sent to the Prophet as a gift by al-Muqawqis, the ruler of Egypt. The Prophet was greatly pleased at Ibrahim's birth and performed the aqiqah (sacrifice) for him on the seventh day, shaving his head and giving the weight of his hair in silver as charity.
The Prophet entrusted Ibrahim's nursing to Umm Sayf, wife of Abu Sayf the blacksmith, in the Aliyah quarter of Madinah. He would visit Ibrahim frequently.
Ibrahim fell ill and died in Rabi' al-Awwal, 10 AH, at approximately sixteen or eighteen months of age. The Prophet held him as he was dying and said: 'O Ibrahim, we cannot avail you anything against Allah.' His eyes flowed with tears. Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf said: 'You too, O Messenger of Allah?' He replied: 'O Ibn Awf, it is mercy.' Then he said: 'The eye weeps and the heart grieves, and we say nothing except what pleases our Lord. O Ibrahim, we are indeed grieved by your departure.'
A solar eclipse occurred on the day of Ibrahim's death, and some people said it had eclipsed because of Ibrahim's death. The Prophet corrected them, saying: 'The sun and the moon are two signs from among the signs of Allah. They do not eclipse for the death or birth of anyone.'
