Son

Abdullah ibn Muhammad

عبد الله بن محمد

At-Tayyib (The Pure), at-Tahir (The Clean)الطيب، الطاهر

Overview

Son of the Prophet and Khadijah, also known as at-Tayyib and at-Tahir. He was born after the Prophetic mission began and died in early childhood in Makkah.

Story

Abdullah was born to the Prophet and Khadijah in Makkah. He is referred to in the sources by the names at-Tayyib (The Pure) and at-Tahir (The Clean). The scholars differed over whether these were three separate sons or one son with multiple names. The majority view, held by Ibn Kathir and others, is that Abdullah, at-Tayyib, and at-Tahir refer to the same person, and that he was given these titles because he was born after the commencement of prophethood — in the era of Islam and purity. Abdullah died in early childhood in Makkah. His death, along with the earlier death of al-Qasim, meant that none of the Prophet's sons survived to adulthood. This was a source of mockery from the Quraysh, who taunted the Prophet for being without a male heir. The Prophet bore these losses with patience and trust in Allah's decree.
