Eldest daughter
Zaynab bint Muhammad
زينب بنت محمد رضي الله عنها
Overview
The eldest daughter of the Prophet. She was married to Abu al-As ibn ar-Rabi' before Islam. She migrated to Madinah while her husband remained in Makkah, and they were later reunited when he accepted Islam.
Story
Zaynab was the eldest daughter of the Prophet and Khadijah. She married her maternal cousin Abu al-As ibn ar-Rabi' before the Prophet's mission. When Islam came, Zaynab accepted but Abu al-As did not, though he treated her well and refused the Quraysh's demand to divorce her.
After Badr, Abu al-As was among the prisoners. Zaynab sent her necklace — which had been Khadijah's wedding gift — as ransom. When the Prophet saw it, he was deeply moved and asked the Companions to release Abu al-As if they wished, and to return the necklace. They agreed.
The Prophet asked Abu al-As to send Zaynab to Madinah as part of the ransom agreement. When she set out, Habbar ibn al-Aswad frightened her camel, causing her to fall and suffer a miscarriage from which she never fully recovered.
Years later, Abu al-As was captured again by the Muslims while on a trade journey. Zaynab granted him protection. He returned the goods he was carrying to their Qurayshi owners, then came to Madinah and accepted Islam. The Prophet reunited them in marriage.
Zaynab passed away in 8 AH from the lingering effects of her injuries. The Prophet descended into her grave and emerged visibly grieved.
