Daughter

Ruqayyah bint Muhammad

رقية بنت محمد رضي الله عنها

Overview

Daughter of the Prophet, married to Uthman ibn Affan. They were among the first to migrate to Abyssinia. She passed away during the Battle of Badr.

Story

Ruqayyah was first married to Utbah ibn Abi Lahab before the Prophet's mission. When Surah al-Masad was revealed condemning Abu Lahab, he ordered his son to divorce her. The Prophet then married her to Uthman ibn Affan. Ruqayyah and Uthman were among the first group to migrate to Abyssinia, earning them the distinction of being described as 'the first couple to migrate for the sake of Allah after Ibrahim and Lut (Lot).' She fell seriously ill during the preparations for the Battle of Badr. The Prophet instructed Uthman to stay behind and care for her. She passed away on the very day that Zayd ibn Harithah arrived in Madinah with the news of the Muslim victory at Badr. After her death, the Prophet married her sister Umm Kulthum to Uthman, earning Uthman the title 'Dhun-Nurayn' (Possessor of Two Lights). The Prophet said: 'If I had forty daughters, I would marry them to Uthman one after another.'
