Daughter
Umm Kulthum bint Muhammad
أم كلثوم بنت محمد رضي الله عنها
Overview
Daughter of the Prophet and Khadijah. She married Uthman ibn Affan after her sister Ruqayyah's death, earning Uthman the title 'Dhun-Nurayn' (Possessor of Two Lights).
Story
Umm Kulthum was the third daughter of the Prophet and Khadijah. Before Islam, she had been married to Utaybah ibn Abi Lahab. When Surah al-Masad was revealed, Abu Lahab commanded both his sons to divorce the Prophet's daughters. Utaybah divorced Umm Kulthum before the marriage had been consummated, just as his brother Utbah divorced Ruqayyah.
After Ruqayyah passed away during the Battle of Badr, the Prophet married Umm Kulthum to Uthman ibn Affan in Rabi' al-Awwal, 3 AH. This gave Uthman the honoured title 'Dhun-Nurayn' — the Possessor of Two Lights — for having married two daughters of the Prophet in succession.
Umm Kulthum remained married to Uthman but they did not have children. She passed away in Sha'ban, 9 AH. The Prophet led her funeral prayer and sat by her grave with tears in his eyes. Anas ibn Malik reported that the Prophet said after her burial: 'If I had a third daughter, I would marry her to Uthman.' Fatimah, Ali, Usama ibn Zayd, and Abu Talhah descended into her grave to assist in the burial.
